I am so excited to announce that I am offering a Baker Creek Seeds Heirloom Seeds Collection furnished by Baker Creek Seeds! One lucky winner will receive this huge bundle valued at $48. Great for a generous gift or for your own garden, this is jam packed full of good stuff.
As winter sets in, I can't help but start planning for my next year's garden. After all, it's only a few months until I can get my hands back in the dirt and start some seeds in the greenhouse. What better way to start your garden dreaming than a big box of goodies?

What is Baker Creek Seeds?
"Baker Creek carries one of the largest selections of seeds from the 19th century, including many Asian and European varieties" (https://www.rareseeds.com/about/). You can view their nearly 2,000 varieties of seeds in their free catalog which can be downloaded or sent to you through their website. Baker Creek also has physical locations near Mansfield, MO; in Petaluma, CA and in Wethersfield, CT.
Why Heirloom?
I am obsessed with planting heirloom varieties in my garden. I have found that the taste can't be compared to most newer varieties. Check out my post about the differences between heirloom, hybrid and other seeds here.
Heirloom varieties of seeds have been around for a long time, usually at least 50 to 100 years. They may be varieties that your grandparents would have planted. Maybe some of you have had the experience of planting seeds that your ancestors have passed down, or maybe you are looking forward to passing down some seeds to your own children or grandchildren.
Not only are the seeds from Baker Creek heirloom, they also have many rare varieties of seeds from different parts of the world. The Baker Creek crew are always on the lookout for new and interesting varieties to offer.

Visiting Baker Creek:
If you have the chance, you should visit Baker Creek Seeds. I had the opportunity to drive the three hours from where I live in Missouri down to Mansfield. I went toward the end of summer, but there was still a lot growing in the trial gardens that they have throughout the property. The "village" of Bakersville is quaint with shops, a restaurant and other buildings. They also had amazing homemade cinnamon rolls and baked goods.
Next time I want to try to get there for one of their festivals. The Spring Planting Festival happens in May. There is also a monthly Heritage Days Festival that happens March through October. If you're in California, they have a National Heirloom Expo yearly in September.
The Prize:
Baker Creek Seeds has generously agreed to offer their Heirloom Seed Collection ($48 value). This collection gives you a great variety of seeds to try out (25 seed packets) along with Clyde's Garden Planner (love mine!) and a mylar bag to hold it all. According to their website, "This collection may include: Greens, Onion, Peppers, Kohlrabi, Herb, Eggplant, Flower, Cucumber, Rutabaga, Summer Squash, Winter Squash, Spinach, Tomatoes, Lettuce, Turnip, Watermelon, Radish, Peas, Beans, Melon, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Beet, Carrot and Corn."
