My Switch Away from Coffee
I don't know about you, but I used to drink a lot of coffee. Not only did the caffeine make me jittery, but I would load my coffee up with lots of cream and sugar. Not the best way to start the day. I decided to ditch the caffeinated version of coffee, but I still put lots of sugary creamer in my decaf coffee.
I finally decided to stop drinking coffee altogether and switched over to tea. Some days I still drink tea, but my new go-to for my morning routine is hot chocolate.
Healthy Hot Chocolate Ingredients
Here are the basic ingredients you will need for your healthy, dairy-free hot chocolate. This recipe is paleo and can be made vegan as well.
Raw Cacao Powder (you can use any cocoa powder or cacao powder, raw or roasted)
Coconut milk (or substitute any other nut milk. Make sure to look for a non-dairy milk that has as few ingredients as possible)
Water
The Process
This recipe is super-simple! We will get to the customization of the recipe below.
Add the following to a small sauce pan:
½ cup water (here's a nice measuring cup set)
½ cup coconut milk (or nut milk of your choice)
1 Tablespoon cacao powder (my favorite measuring spoon set)
Heat stove to medium heat and whisk together as it heats. Alternatively, you can heat the water and coconut milk in the microwave and then blend in the cacao powder.
How to Customize Your Recipe
After you have heated and whisked everything together, here are some optional ingredients you can add:
MCT Oil - I love using MCT oil because it adds some healthy fat and fills me up in the morning. I add about 1 Tablespoon to my hot chocolate.
Protein powder - Use collagen based or plant based protein to add some extra protein to your morning drink.
Sweetener - honey (make sure it's local and raw) or other sweetener that you like. I am at a point that my body doesn't crave sweetness as long as I keep myself satiated with a good mix of fat, protein and carbs. But, it's always nice to have a little treat every now and then.
Sea Salt - Sea salt gives a nice salty/ sweet feeling.
After adding your additional customizations:
Whisk, froth or blend your hot chocolate to mix everything in and give it a nice frothy texture.
Pour your hot chocolate into a nice mug. Add a sprinkle of sea salt.
Enjoy this cozy and nourishing drink anytime of day!
